“Data Security is Essential to Expanded Judicial Access,” Security Info Watch

June 13, 2025

Community Legal Services Director of Technology Eli Mattern authored an article for Security Info Watch that published on June 13, 2025 discussing the cybersecurity risks that law firms, nonprofits and especially legal aid organizations face.

She explains that law firms are slow to adopt updated procedures, further weakening their cybersecurity. Nonprofits are susceptible to internal leaks, due to their inability to vet volunteers. Mattern states that law firms and nonprofits intersect at legal aid organizations. These organizations hold high-risk data associated with law firms and are often underfunded, like many nonprofits.

“AI and machine learning present unique challenges for our field – but they also create great opportunities, both in terms of cybersecurity and increased access to the judicial system. Now, more than ever, it is incumbent upon legal aid professionals and the data security industry to work together to continue to develop innovative solutions to cyber risk,” advises Mattern.
