“Dynamic Strategies for Managing Pro Bono Legal Aid Attorneys,” Orlando Sentinel

Community Legal Services CEO Jeff Harvey, Esq. authored an article for the Orlando Sentinel on June 13, 2025, discussing the challenges our legal system faces in adequately providing representation for clients. Harvey stresses the importance of legal aid organizations in providing legal representation for all regardless of financial or personal limitations.

Expanding legal access is possible through pro bono collaborations between private attorneys, legal professionals, and legal aid organizations. CLS upholds its mission to provide judicial access and legal representation to those who could not otherwise afford it.

“Legal aid organizations strengthen and enhance our communities,” explains Harvey. “Without legal aid helping clients navigate the judicial system, seemingly simple legal matters could limit people’s ability to build stable, constructive, thriving lives for themselves and their families.”

He further notes that legal aid organizations play a central role in increasing the legal profession’s involvement in community-based service. For example, he highlights that CLS provides legal clinics on a variety of subjects, a mobile legal helpline for client inquiries and a Peer Academy that helps lawyers become more knowledgeable in new practice areas by providing a modular training curriculum, mentoring and networking programs,

“As a lawyer who has volunteered for pro bono cases, I know firsthand the time and attention demands lawyers face,” said Harvey. “I also know the immense degree of satisfaction pro bono representation provides. It reminds us of why we entered the profession in the first place – to use our minds and our practice to create positive outcomes that may change the lives of those in need.”
