Community Legal Services CEO Jeffrey Harvey, Esq. and pro bono attorney Clyde Lemon of Fighter Law were interviewed by WKMG News Channel 6 in a story that aired on December 3, 2025, outlining how, in the State of Florida, the constitutional right to an attorney does not extend to civil cases, leaving many residents without legal help for critical issues like housing, criminal record clearing, and voting rights. They discuss how nearly half of Floridians can’t afford a lawyer, creating what advocates describe as a growing justice gap.
Harvey explained that low-income residents feel that gap the most. “It’s a shame to be one legal issue away from poverty, and then after you lose your legal issue, now you qualify for services,” said Harvey. “That just doesn’t make sense.”
CLS relies heavily on pro bono attorneys, including Lemon, who volunteers his time on eviction cases, expungements and voting rights restoration. Lemon shared the impact he hopes to make with this work. “This is my way of giving back to the community,” said Lemon. “It’s about showing that I care and I’m willing to pour into individuals who need help.”
Harvey emphasized that volunteers like Lemon are essential to narrowing the justice gap, because for many clients, pro bono support is their only option—and often their only hope.
