“What are your legal options this hurricane season?” FOX35
Paul Ferreira, managing attorney of the Disaster Legal Services Unit, was interviewed by FOX35 on June 10, 2025 outlining potential legal needs during the upcoming hurricane season.
Ferreira discussed that Central Floridians are unfamiliar with FEMA and insurance claims processes, leading to their claims being denied. He shared that CLS lawyers are available to assist with different types of claims, contractor issues and public benefits, as well as the handling of potentially compromised documents. Additionally, he refers clients to other resources when presented with issues outside of the legal sector.
Ferreira also recommended reviewing policies, coverages and documents with insurance agencies. He emphasized the importance of preparing all documents in a waterproof and fireproof way, from deeds to pet documents to personal identification.
“[We] recommend that people waterproof their documents prior to a storm and keep them in a place that they can grab it and take it along with their other stuff, if they have to evacuate,” advises Ferreira.
