“Attracting and Retaining Top Talent: Innovative and Successful Strategies for Legal Aid Organizations,” MIE Journal

Chief Human Resources Officer, Nadia Soulouque authored an article for the MIE Journal that highlights how innovative and successful strategies help attract and retain top talent in legal aids. Even as a hot job market and private practice salaries dwarf legal aid pay, the biggest challenge for legal aid firms is attracting and keeping mission‑driven attorneys. Our overarching solution is to differentiate on purpose, culture and long‑term growth by offering a compelling mission, flexible work‑life policies, creative compensation (loan‑repayment, health‑reimbursement, generous PTO) and robust onboarding, leadership and skills‑development programs. By listening to staff, fostering servant‑leadership, and investing in professional development, we demonstrate that a values‑based, supportive environment can compete with private firms and sustain a talented, committed legal‑aid workforce.

“We have found that, by focusing not just on signing the new employee but on long-term job satisfaction, we differentiate ourselves for both today’s service-minded law school graduates as well as tenured attorneys seeking more meaningful practices.”
